The Travesuras NY Ice Cream collection is a three piece bag collection embodying different flavors of ice cream, with toppings (stickers and temporary tattoos) to match. The flavors of the bags are Cake, Butter Pecan, Cherry, representing different aspects and stereotypes that follow women on an everyday basis. The Cake Bag is a euphemism for butts and other body parts that women are often catcalled for. The bag features a velvet print with these phrases as an act to reclaim the words used against us to shame us; shameless. The Butter Pecan Bag is inspired by the phrase “Butter Pecan Rican” which was often used to describe Puerto Rican women of a lighter skin tone. By using some of my relatives to model the bag, I am showing an alternative perspective of what and who Puerto Rican women really are; proud. The Cherry Bag, represents femininity in its truest form, the menstrual cycle and the idea of virginity. Owning the vibrant color is the epitome power; unapologetic. The italicized words are used to express the message behind my bags. The display highlights the origin of these ideas showing these concepts as objects, the ice cream cart brings a sense of nostalgia of the paraguas carts and Mr. Softee trucks that roam New York during the summer.
I wanted to take the time to formally photograph my thesis collection apart from my major's group show. Storytelling is a major part of my design practice, and in creating my Travesuras Ice Cream Collection and ice cream cart display I wanted to show it in the street setting.
